Ah, first TheRegister, now Apple Matters. The whine of people willing and able to spend $600 on a phone is pathetic beyond belief. Sure, I'd be a bit miffed too, but it certainly is not worth this epic amount of outcry all over the web. At least you do notice that "it was worth it". Be sure to have one of your other writers prepare a piece of in the line of
"Apple products too cheap, miffed customers complain"
for the next update.
@ CaptnJack: Get - some - extension - cable ;)
@ Beeb: Yes, the black issue is ridiculous. Maybe it is supposed to make up for the lack of a 12" Pro model... *strokes 12" PB G4* naa, they could never make up for that.
Dell does cheap. Cheap does not come in nice. Nice costs more money. It's as easy as that. Cheaper also sells better. Why do you think Microsoft or Dell are where they are? Hint: It is not because they spend all their time trying to make the best working or most aesthetically appealing product with a corresponding price. Add to that the simple fact that the majority of people is not cursed with taste in the first place, and you got cheap, ugly computers full of blinkenlights (If you scratch the cheap part, you might end up with something of "industrial beauty" like IBM did with the Thinkpads). Get over it and be happy that there are companies which know your needs exist and are willing to cater to them.
I simply cannot believe that anyone would still be eager to buy The White Album – again... but in a DRMd, compressed format. The Beatles / iTunes fuss is beyond annoying.
Wow, look at all those comments, seems like Hadley found the live wire this time ;)
I will not dive into discussing Leopard since I have not seen it yet outside the video demos, but it does sound promising in some regards. The more disturbing issue from my perspective is that Apple is probably going to unleash the iPhone upon Europe next week, and the wretched thing still
- has no copy'n'paste
- does not support BT transfers to other phones
- cannot fully sync with Apple's own iCal
Issues which are all critical and have much more letdown appeal than any OS X update.
What do you think about Quicktime performance in Camino? I found it lacking. For example, video would freeze while sound ran on. I also like the rendering in Safari better.
So the next Mac Pro might easily look like a NeXTcube, eh? The journey towards the NeXT side will be complete!
I was usure about the new iMac until I saw it in person - it looks gorgeous. The glossy 24" screen is pretty nice too on short inspection. The whole thing is only dragged down by the shoddy keyboard and mouse. You are right when you ask if Apple failed to learn a thing. They have one of the best mouse designs ever right in their drawer - the Desktop Mouse II. It just needs a second button and some added scrollability.
Benji gets my personal award of excellence for "sycophantic".
And oh, Greg, I think there was MD-Data or some such product, Sony just refused to develop it in some half-decent way, or sell it for a half-decent price, or both. When MD finally reached halfway usable capacities with Hi-MD, Apple support was still unheard of. Sony pretty much deserved what they got.
I dare to disagree. Like all input devices, keyboards are a matter of taste. So you may well like this latest iteration of Apple's peripheral incompetence. In my book, it is totally inadequate. The keys are widely set apart, and for a reason. Bare of any tactile guidance by cap-shape, this is the only chance of not constantly missing or double pressing. The tactile feedback is shameful. It basically consist of a sting of pain each and every time you reach the end of the - short - key-travel. You might as well get a laser-projected keyboard and hack away straight on your desk, which would pretty much feel the same way. Audible feedback is low, which might be nice in certain environments, but it is just that, low feedback. Also, Apple's cynical "we know better than you" attitude reaches a new high with the re-mapped keys along with the - in some circles - furiously debated loss of the "Apple-key" (think about it what you want). Ever since the original iMac, Apple has been feeding us shoddy keyboards, and this one is no exception. You may like it if all you know is notebooks or the Apple "king of wobble" desktop terrors of late. It sure was not hard to come up with something better than the last one. At some points the only way is up. So the new keyboard is "up". But not much. The looks are superbly clean, and the wireless version might be quite nice on the couch. Anyone truly concerned about their typing experience will happily stay with their Apple Extended II though. Residents of QWERTY-land have the added luxury of the Matias Tactile Pro at their disposal. It would be nice if Matias would finally commit to international customers too.
Thanks Apple for the $200 bitch-slap
